Bear Creek Merry Christmas 2020

Boer Goat Buck

Sharing a Christmas Eve Story written by Eunice Day.  It circulates thru the Goat Community at Christmas Time and is a Tear Jerker, grab some Kleenex.

GIFT OF THE OLD ONE

By Eunice Day, Washington ME

The young couple had made their usual hurried, pre-Christmas visit to the little farm where dwelt their elderly parents with their small herd of goats. The farm had been named Lone Pine Farm because of the huge pine which topped the hill behind the farm, and through the years had become a talisman to the old man and his wife, and a landmark in the countryside.

The old folks no longer showed their goats, for the years had taken

Their toll, but they sold a little milk, and a few kids each year, and the goats were their reason for joy in the morning and contentment at day's end.

Crossly, as they prepared to leave, the young couple confronted the

Old folks. "Why do you not at least dispose of "The Old One".  She is no longer of use to you. It's been years since you've had either kids or milk from her.  You should cut corners and save where you can.  Why do you keep her anyway?"

The old man looked down as his worn boot scuffed at the barn floor

And his arm stole defensively about the Old One's neck as he drew her to him and rubbed her gently behind the ears. He replied softly, "We keep her because of love. Only because of love."

Baffled and irritated, the young folks wished the old man and his wife a Merry Christmas and headed back toward the city as darkness stole through the valley.

So it was, that because of the leave-taking, no one noticed the insulation smoldering on the frayed wires in the old barn.  None saw the first spark fall. None but the "Old One".

In a matter of minutes, the whole barn was ablaze and the hungry

Flames were licking at the loft full of hay.  With a cry of horror and despair, the old man shouted to his wife to call for help as he raced to the barn to save their beloved goats.  But the flames were roaring now, and the blazing heat drove him back.

He sank sobbing to the ground, helpless before the fire's fury.

By the time the fire department arrived, only smoking, glowing ruins were left, and the old man and his wife. They thanked those who had come to their aid, and the old man turned to his wife, resting her white head upon his shoulders as he clumsily dried her tears with a frayed red bandana.

Brokenly he whispered, "We have lost much, but God has spared our home on this eve of Christmas. Let us, therefore, climb the hill to the old pine where we have sought comfort in times of despair. We will look down upon our home and give thanks to God that it has been spared."

And so, he took her by the hand and helped her up the snowy hill as he brushed aside his own tears with the back of his hand. As they stepped over the little knoll at the crest of the hill, they looked up and gasped in amazement at the incredible beauty before them. Seemingly, every glorious, brilliant star in the heavens was caught up in the glittering, snow-frosted branches of their beloved pine, and it was aglow with heavenly candles. And poised on its top most bough, a crystal crescent moon glistened like spun glass.  Never had a mere mortal created a Christmas tree such as this.

Suddenly, the old man gave a cry of wonder and incredible joy as he pulled his wife forward. There, beneath the tree, was their Christmas gift.

Bedded down about the "Old One" close to the trunk of the tree, was the entire herd, safe. At the first hint of smoke, she had pushed the door ajar with her muzzle and had led the goats through it.  Slowly and with great dignity, never looking back, she had led them up the hill, stepping daintily through the snow. The kids were frightened and dashed about.  The skittish yearlings looked back at the crackling, hungry flames, and tucked their tails under them as they licked their lips and hopped like rabbits.  The milkers pressed uneasily against the "Old One" as she moved calmly up the hill and to safety beneath the pine. And now, she lay among them and gazed at the faces of those she loved.  Her body was brittle with years, but the golden eyes were filled with devotion as she offered her gift-Because of love.

Only Because of love.

For this time of the year.....Merry Christmas.........

Harambe has been one of our herd sires since July 2016.   He goes back to our Joshua line thru his Sire Joshua's Reflection.  Just an interesting note when his Dam Bear Creek BC Z465 Cathie's Clown was just a kid I wrote on her record, "walks wide".  She stood out and of course complemented Joshua's Reflection to their creation of Harambe.    We continue to be impressed with his kids!!

He placed 8th at the 2017 ABGA National Show in Grand Island, NE   He currently has 46 ABGA Ennoblement Points.  You can see more pictures on the Show Goats Page.

UPDATE:  19 October 2020 ShowMe Genetic Services located in Strafford, MO collected Harambe.  They said his semen was excellent!!!!  We are offering a few straws of semen for $100.00 each.  Buyer is responsible for all shipping expenses.  If your need to add some fast weight gain and width to your breeding program.  Here is your guy!!

Bear Creek 2019 - 2020 Kids Sneak Peek - Boer Goat Buck
Bear Creek Bucks Born 8 - 15 Dec 2019. Picture taken 16 Mar 2020

We started 2019/2020 kidding season 8 Dec and most were born by 15 Dec 2019.  This picture is just a sneak peek.  They were weaned yesterday 16 March 2020 and met our expectations of making market weight of 60 - 80 lbs. at weaning.

UPDATE 12 September 2020:  We have SOLD all of our Bucks.  BUT, kidding starts December 2020 and we should have Buck kids and wethers for sale by the 1st of April 2021.

Commercial Goat Operation 101

Consider your Kids normally weigh 50 lbs. when 3 months old

New Buck cost $1500.00

Your Kids from new Buck now weigh 60 lbs. when 3 months old

Market price is $3.00 per lb.

You sell 50 kids:  you now have i.e.  50 kids X 10 lbs = 500 MORE  lbs to sell @ $3.00 per lb.

This equals $1500.00, so your Buck is paid for the first year and you still have the 2500 lbs. @ $3.00 per lb. thus $7500.00 to spend.

This is just stuff to think about, your kids could weigh even more and/or you may have to upgrade some of your Does to get where you want to go.    If fast weight gain is your goal, it is cheaper to feed a good goat than a bad one.  PLUS even your labor should be cut in half if you are selling kids at 3 months instead of 6 months.  One more thing, you may want to pull the top kids and offer them as show prospects to the 4-H and FFA kids and that could easily pay for new buck #2.  There are NO guarantees when raising Livestock except that someday they will die.   A lot depends on weather, management and so much more, it is a continued learning experience.  We wish all Goat Ranchers many Blessings and the very Best Experience.  We always welcome questions about raising goats and are very willing to share our experiences with you!!!!

The grown up picture of Dream Maker. Picture taken 8 July 2020.

Introducing Dream Maker as one of our Main Herdsires.  He was sired by Bear Creek BC E894 Harambe.  He weighed 279 lbs. on 8 July 2020.

Harambe kids are easy keepers and fast gainers, traits we hope will be passed on to commercial herds so they can get their kids to market wt at weaning age.

We sold a Buck kid sired by Harambe, Bear Creek BC H1103 born 19 Dec 2018 and he weighed 96 lbs. on 18 April 2019 giving him a .74 average daily gain at 4 months old.

UPDATE 28 Dec 2020:  We are reluctantly offering Dream Maker for Sale simply due to NOT having enough Doe's for him.  I have told Harambe he is going to Die on our place plus I now have the been looking forever new Buck MCR Let R Rip.  If I kept Dream Maker for a couple more years I could put him on some of Rip's kids, BUT, that would NOT be fair to Dream Maker.
